Alzheimer's risk reduced via diet and exercise

Consuming the right level of certain nutrients can help to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, experts have said.

Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oils have been suggested to have beneficial effects in people who want to reduce their risk, and antioxidants found in vegetables are also believed to have a protective effect.

While these nutrients are found in the Mediterranean diet, many British people do not eat enough oily fish and vegetables and boost their intake via dietary supplements.

A spokeswoman for the Alzheimer's Society said: "The Mediterranean diet is a really good example of the foods that people should be eating. Oily fish, vegetables and even a glass of red wine all help.

"Antioxidants, because of all the vegetables, and also the oils in fish help reduce the risk of getting dementia."

The expert also emphasised the importance of exercise in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

"It should never be just relying on diet; it has to be a combination that people should concentrate on," she insisted.

Experts predict that, by the year 2025, one million UK residents will have dementia, a condition that currently costs the nation over £17 billion per year.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18283933-ADNFCR
