Review emphasises importance of diet for brain health
A review of more than 160 clinical trials has underlined the importance of diet and exercise for brain health.
The analysis found that omega-3 fish oils, folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 are all important for preventing mental disorders.
Dr Barbara Levine, director of the Nutrition Information Centre at Weill Cornell Medical College, said that the researchers "covered the beneficial effects of folic acid and other B vitamins, especially when it comes to preventing cognitive decline and dementia among the elderly".
"This comprehensive analysis points to the importance of dietary nutrients, which oftentimes are not plentiful in the food we eat," she noted.
Dr Levine is a scientific advisory board member for an educational website that seeks to inform people about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins.
According to the website, omega-3 fish oils have also been linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease, improved immune function in infants, and a reduction in the accumulation of beta amyloid plaques linked with memory loss in the brains of elderly people.
