A person would not last for 30 minutes without Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10), an expert has revealed.
The compound is present in all of the body's cells, yet the majority of people have never heard of it.
According to Bruce Lipshutz, a professor of chemistry at UC Santa Barbara, the body naturally manufactures Co Q10, but this process slows down as we age.
"Nature gave us, through 2.5 billion years of evolution, a number of fundamental anti-ageing, free-radical scavengers that helped us to survive, on average, only to about 40 years of age, until modern medicine came along," he explained.
"Evolution teaches us that Co Q10 is as important as vitamin C. But who's teaching this to our aging population?" he wondered.
The expert noted that, while traditionally expensive, Co Q10 is now affordable, meaning that consumers can benefit from this "important area of dietary supplements" without breaking the bank.
