A growing number of people are venturing to exotic locations despite the credit crunch, leading travel companies have claimed.
However, with the top four emerging holiday hotspots listed as Tunisia, Egypt, Thailand and India, health experts are concerned that many holidaymakers may experience a bout of 'Delhi Belly' while overseas.
All of the four top emerging destinations are black spots for poor hygiene and are therefore high-risk locations for travellers' diarrhoea.
International intestinal health expert Dr Georges Mouton explained: "The balance of bacteria in the intestines is fragile and can easily be disrupted. It's not uncommon for food and drink in tropical or sub-tropical countries to be contaminated by harmful bacteria."
Dr Mouton advises travellers to wash their hands regularly, minimise their intake of raw foods and avoid tap water while overseas to minimise their risk of digestive problems.
Probiotics are also thought to reduce the risk of travellers' diarrhoea by helping to maintain levels of healthy bacteria in the gut.
