British adults experience 2.3 billion episodes of pain every year, bringing the nation's pain levels to a ten-year high, new research suggests.
A Nurofen Express poll has found that the average woman experiences 56 bouts of common aches and pains every year, while a typical man suffers 41 episodes.
These include headaches, backaches, sports injuries, hangovers, period pain and toothache.
Celebrity psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos commented: "This increase in common aches and pains could be a consequence of what seems to be an increasingly 'yo-yo' approach to our health, where our hectic and sometimes hedonistic lifestyles result in haphazard and inconsistent care for wellbeing, peppered with the occasional guilt-ridden health kick."
The survey also revealed that the average woman experiences eight painful periods every year.
Many women find that increasing their intake of magnesium or omega-3 fish oils helps to reduce period pain, as can pine bark extract.
