Women's increasingly busy lifestyles are leading to a whole host of bowel problems, according to new research.
A study by DulcoEase found that the 'rush hour' mentality British women are experiencing today is playing havoc with their bowel health.
Previously, women's lives were more regular and ordered, with routines centred around family, sitting down to enjoy meals together at set intervals and only drinking alcohol occasionally and travelling abroad.
But recent years have ushered in the 'age of the super woman', with women increasingly looking to powerful figures in the spotlight including Angelina Jolie and Victoria Beckham who have to juggle being a wife and mother with having a career.
As a result, women are spending less time looking after their own health and wellbeing. The study found that 51 per cent of women do not exercise regularly, while 47 per cent of women do not drink two litres of water a day.
A further 41 per cent drink coffee every day, while over a third feel they are stressed and do not have enough 'me-time'.
These increasingly hectic lifestyles are seeing a rise in bowel problems including constipation - suffered by 64 per cent of respondents - and straining when going to the loo.
Dr Dawn Harper, GP author and star of Embarrassing Illnesses, said: "Our bowels are often the most neglected parts of our body - but they deserve our attention.
"People know to ask for help if they have difficulty breathing but many suffer in silence when they have a bowel problem, despite there being simple lifestyle or treatment solutions. We shouldn't let embarrassment stop us from keeping our bowels healthy."
