Charity highlights impact of lifestyle on bone health

Many people do not realise that their lifestyle can have an effect on their bone health in later life, an expert has said.

According to Siobhan Hallmark, a press officer at the National Osteoporosis Society, the bone thinning disease osteoporosis is often misconstrued as something that only affects older women.

However, the expert noted that the way in which people lead their lives can determine the state of their bone health in later years.

She revealed: "Up until our mid-20s, the construction cells in our bones work harder building strength into our skeleton. From our 40s onwards, the demolition cells overtake and our bones gradually lose their density as a natural part of ageing."

Ms Hallmark recommends consuming 700mg of calcium every day as well as maintaining sufficient levels of vitamin D, which enables the body to absorb calcium.

According to the National Osteoporosis Society, 230,000 people fracture a bone because of osteoporosis every year in the UK.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18645478-ADNFCR
