Stroke risk may be linked to wealth

Wealthier people between the ages of 50 and 64 may have a lower risk of having a stroke, a new study has claimed.

Research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests that the link is much less significant with people over the age of 65.

Dr Mauricio Avendano, co-author of the study, claimed that education and income also played a role in the likelihood of a person suffering a stroke.

"We confirmed that lower wealth, education and income are associated with increased stroke up to age 65, and wealth is the strongest predictor of stroke among the factors we looked at," he said.

"After age 65, the association of education, income and wealth with stroke are very weak, and wealth did not clearly predict stroke," Dr Avendano added.

According to the Stroke Association, the risk of a stroke is lower for people have diets that are low in salt and high in fibre and eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
