Vitamin D 'helps brain development'

Vitamin D plays a part in the brain's development and function, a new study which appears in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal suggests.

Research conducted by Dr Joyce C McCann and Dr Bruce N Ames at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) has provided sufficient evidence to demonstrate that vitamin D plays a role in brain function.

"This critical analysis of vitamin D function and the brain is a model of careful thinking about nutrition and behaviour," commented Dr Gerald Weissmann, editor-in-chief of the FASEB Journal.

"Doctors McCann and Ames deftly show that while vitamin D has an important role in the development and function of the brain, its exact effects on behaviour remain unclear. Pointing to the need for further study, the authors argue for vitamin D supplementation in groups at risk."

Vitamin D has been traditionally associated with bone health as it regulates the levels of calcium in the body.

However, it has also recently been linked with autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis and Type I diabetes.

Vitamin D is normally obtained through exposure to sunlight, but can also be found in foods such as fatty fish.
