German researchers have found that patients with eczema may benefit from increasing their intake of omega-3.
Omega-3 is a fatty acid found in oily fish, but it can also be obtained by taking dietary supplements.
A study involving 44 patients found that those who took omega-3 supplements experienced an improvement in their symptoms.
An eight week omega-3 regime brought about an average 18 per cent reduction in eczema symptoms, the report in the British Journal of Dermatology reveals.
One of the researchers, Professor Margitta Worm of the Charite Department of Dermatology and Allergology, told the Daily Telegraph that the findings were "extremely interesting" and showed that omega-3 "may have a beneficial impact on the outcome of atopic eczema".
"These positive results will be investigated in further clinical trials to improve the management of atopic eczema which is a growing problem," she added.
