Sales of pet obesity drugs on the rise

A growing number of pets are being treated for obesity, according to sales figures for veterinary drugs.

According to the online pet medicines dispensary Petmeds.co.uk, sales of pet obesity drugs increased at one-and-a-half times the rate of other drugs.

The figures suggest that obesity in domestic animals is increasing in line with obesity in humans, a trend that was confirmed by the fact that 65 per cent of animals seen by vets at the RSPCA's Pets Get Slim roadshow last year were overweight.

Ricky Thomas, a spokesman for Petmeds.co.uk, said that the obesity problem seems to be getting worse.

"There has been a significant rise in sales of obesity-related products, but we are concerned that dog owners in particular should try to deal with the root cause of their animals' weight problems rather than try to find a quick-fix solution," Mr Thomas told UK Pets.

The expert suggested that the problem is "intrinsically" linked to owners, who seem to have less time to exercise their pets and also tend to over-feed them.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18488586-ADNFCR
