New research suggests that antidepressants such as Prozac and Seroxat may not work for the majority of patients with depression.
Experts at the University of Hull carried out a review of clinical trials involving prescription antidepressants and found that they are no more effective than a placebo in patients with mild depression.
However, patients may benefit from taking omega-3 fish oils, according to a number of studies.
One such study, conducted at Ohio State University, found a link between low intake of omega-3 fatty acids and certain markers of depression.
Martha Belury, an associate professor of human nutrition, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the university, said: "This study has shown that even in people who did not take supplements, maybe just a little bit more omega-3 could help reduce their markers for both stress and depression.
"The important message for consumers is that they don't have to take mega-doses of omega-3 to have some impact. It might not take a whole lot to have a significant clinical impact," she added.
