Omega-3 fish oils work against depression

New research suggests that antidepressants such as Prozac and Seroxat may not work for the majority of patients with depression.

Experts at the University of Hull carried out a review of clinical trials involving prescription antidepressants and found that they are no more effective than a placebo in patients with mild depression.

However, patients may benefit from taking omega-3 fish oils, according to a number of studies.

One such study, conducted at Ohio State University, found a link between low intake of omega-3 fatty acids and certain markers of depression.

Martha Belury, an associate professor of human nutrition, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the university, said: "This study has shown that even in people who did not take supplements, maybe just a little bit more omega-3 could help reduce their markers for both stress and depression.

"The important message for consumers is that they don't have to take mega-doses of omega-3 to have some impact. It might not take a whole lot to have a significant clinical impact," she added.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18484524-ADNFCR
