Herbal remedies may aid fertility

Herbal remedies may help to increase the chances of pregnancy in couples who are trying to conceive, a new book has claimed.

At least 20 to 25 per cent of couples of reproductive age are affected by infertility, according to statistics, and around ten per cent of couples never manage to conceive.

According to a new book, entitled 'Traditional Herbal Medicines: A Guide To Their Safer Use', a number of herbal extracts could help to create the right conditions for conception.

For example, both men and women can benefit from taking ginseng, while garlic, ginger and liquorice may all help to boost sperm production.

However, the book's authors emphasise that consumers should be careful when taking herbal medicines as they could be harmful if taken incorrectly.

Co-author Dr Lakshman Karalliedde, who is a consultant for the Health Protection Agency's chemical hazards and poisons division, said that traditional herbal medicines "have stood the test of time and do not carry the risks inherent in newly developed conventional medicines".

However, he emphasised: "Herbal medicines should be used with the same degree of caution as conventional medicines."ADNFCR-1167-ID-18484528-ADNFCR
