Omega-3 fish oils and other essential fatty acids play an important part in maintaining eye sight and helping to prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD), experts claim.
Around 500,000 people suffer from AMD, a disease that gradually destroys sharp, central vision.
According to Dr Michel Guillon, director of the Sloane Square optician store Michel Guillon, experts generally agree that the use of essential fatty acids helps to control inflammation, which is a component of AMD.
"My advice is to include oily fish in the diet and for those at risk to take a high quality fish oils supplement to ensure a regular intake," he advised.
"However, supplementation must not be a counter to poor diet; good diet and supplementation must go together," he added.
Scientists have also found that a good intake of antioxidants, such as vitamin A, C and E, as well as zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin is beneficial in maintaining good eye health.
