Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may help to boost performance and reduce exercise-related fatigue, a new study has found.
CoQ10 is a fat-soluble vitamin-like substance that occurs naturally in every cell of the body.
It is important for energy production and is also an antioxidant, but the body's natural levels start to fall after the age of about 20.
Japanese scientists have recently carried out a study to determine whether boosting levels of CoQ10 could help to improve physical performance.
The researchers recruited 17 volunteers who were either given daily CoQ10 supplements or a placebo for eight days and the researchers then tested their physical performance on an exercise bicycle.
Publishing their findings in the journal Nutrition, they concluded that CoQ10 supplementation "may attenuate physical fatigue" as performance increased when participants were taking a daily 300mg dose of CoQ10.
Lead author Kei Mizuno revealed: "We found that oral administration of 300mg of coenzyme Q10 for one week improved physical performance during fatigue-inducing workload trials on a bicycle ergometer," NutraIngredients.com reports.
