Pregnancy cravings may indicate vitamin deficiencies

Cravings during pregnancy may indicate that a woman is low on certain key nutrients, an expert has suggested.

Janet Pollard, regional children's service lead with NHS Direct, said that while some people believe pregnancy cravings to be a myth, they could well be "a message from your body that perhaps you are lacking certain things".

"It's interesting to try and identify what your craving is to see what you're perhaps missing," she claimed.

"If you're craving cheese then perhaps you're low on calcium, as milk is associated with calcium. If you are craving pickles, you may be low in sodium, and often people may say they have cravings for nuts, meaning their B vitamins are low."

The expert concluded: "As long as the craving isn't turning into a regular binge, it's probably not too harmful, but the general advice is that you need a healthy balance in pregnancy."ADNFCR-1167-ID-18449628-ADNFCR
