Organic milk may not provide extra selenium, vitamins
Organic milk does not contain any more vitamins or selenium than conventional milk, a new study reported in the Irish Independent has claimed.
The finding, which was presented at the conference of the European Association of Animal Production in Dublin this week, suggests that consumers may need to rely on dietary supplements in order to achieve extra vitamins, despite the fact that previous studies had suggested organic milk might contain higher levels of vitamins A and E.
Researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Scientists said that they had expected differences in milk composition between organic and conventional milk, as levels of vitamins and selenium are directly affected by what a cow eats.
However, they reported that this was not the case, although they noted that dairy cows in Sweden tend to be fed on grass and clover, regardless of whether they are on an organic or a conventional farm.
