Multivitamin supplements may aid weight loss

Multivitamin and mineral supplements could help people to lose weight, researchers have said.

A study by scientists at Laval University, the University of Ottawa and Pennington Biomedical Research Centre asked 267 men and 230 women to fill in dietary questionnaires.

The researchers found that men who claimed to take dietary supplements tended to have lower body weight, fat mass and body mass index (BMI).

The study also revealed that women who regularly took multivitamins and minerals reported feeling less hungry.

Publishing their findings in the British Journal of Nutrition, the researchers wrote: "Appetite is increased in response to body weight loss due to variations in hormone levels implication in the regulation of energy balance.

"Since some vitamins and minerals are involved in the synthesis of these and other [proteins] that control food intake, a decreased micronutrient availability could affect peptide hormone levels and thus interfere with the signalling pathways that control food intake."ADNFCR-1167-ID-18377632-ADNFCR
