The majority of British consumers do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their diet and could benefit from taking dietary supplements, researchers have found.
Just 30 per cent of Britons eat the recommended amount of fish, placing themselves at unnecessary risk of poor health, a study by Efalex revealed.
The survey discovered that nearly 60 per cent of people do not know how much fish they should consume and 40 per cent admitted that they didn't actually know how to prepare fish.
According to health experts, omega-3 fatty acids are essential for healthy brain function, coordination, learning ability, concentration, heart and joint health.
Nutritionist Fiona Hunter commented: "It is concerning that four in five people don't eat enough oily fish as adequate intake of omega-3 fatty acids is vital."
The expert added: "Taking a supplement is a convenient and easy way to boost intake and ensure you get the necessary nutrients needed for good health."
