Iron supplements and multivitamins may boost fertility
Multivitamin tablets and high iron consumption may help to prevent infertility from ovulatory disorders, new research suggests.
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) conducted a study into a number of dietary and lifestyle factors that previous studies have found to predict ovulatory disorder infertility.
The factors included iron consumption, multivitamin use, the ratio of dietary mono-unsaturated to trans-fats, and fibre intake.
Findings suggest that women who incorporated the most factors into their lifestyle tended to be less likely to suffer from infertility.
The women who benefited the most ate less trans-fats and sugar from carbohydrates, consumed more fibre and iron, had a lower body mass index (BMI) and took more multivitamins.
Dr Jorge Chavarro, research fellow in the university's department of nutrition, commented: "What we found was that, as women started following more of these recommendations, their risk of infertility dropped substantially for every one of the dietary and lifestyle strategies undertaken."
