Experts reveal simple ways to cut Christmas calories
It can be difficult to avoid the tasty morsels on offer at functions over the winter months, but the British Nutrition Foundation insists that there are a number of simple things that can be done in order to prevent weight gain.
Nutrition scientist Bridget Aisbitt advises maintaining "a sensible level of consumption", as it can be a struggle to lose weight once it has been put on.
The expert recommends having something to eat before going to social parties in order to prevent overindulgence on less healthy food items.
"It's a good idea to have a snack before you go - something that will fill you up, like a sandwich or soup or a baked potato - something that will be low in fat but filling so that you won't go there and stuff yourself full of vol-au-vents," she suggested.
Ms Aisbitt believes that it is still possible to enjoy the festive period, as you can pick occasions where you allow yourself to indulge.
"Weight gain doesn't really happen from one meal, it happens from consuming more than you need over a number of days and weeks," she explained.
"So I think there's no problem with having one day - Christmas Day is a bit of a day to indulge."
However, even Christmas Day doesn't need to be a weight management disaster, as Ms Aisbitt suggests removing the skin off the turkey, serving the Christmas pudding with yoghurt instead of brandy butter, and drinking wine instead of creamy liqueurs.
