Breast cancer is 'biggest fear'

Breast cancer is still the most feared disease among women despite major advances in diagnosis and treatment, a survey has found.

Researchers found that 42 per cent of women are most afraid of getting breast cancer, while 40 per cent fear developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Pamela Goldberg, chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign - which commissioned the research - said that the fear of breast cancer is "still significant".

However, she noted that major advances have been made and that the outlook for breast cancer patients is "far brighter than ever before" - a fact recognised by 88 per cent of those polled.

"Indeed, the 21st century woman with breast cancer is justified in feeling more positive about the future with the introduction of drugs such as herceptin and the aromatase inhibitors, which are bringing real benefits for people with breast cancer," Ms Goldberg revealed.

"Over 80 per cent of people diagnosed with breast cancer today will survive for more than five years. This is the result of years of breast cancer research," she concluded.ADNFCR-1167-ID-18325306-ADNFCR
